The report on Mental Health, in which the MEP and Psychiatrist Stelios Kymbouropoulos is the shadow rapporteur for the largest political group in the European Parliament, the European People’s Party, was voted in favor on 7 November 2023, in the Committee on the Environment, Health and Food Safety

The European Parliament gave the “green light” to the report on Mental Health, in which MEP and Psychiatrist Stelios Kymbouropoulos is the shadow rapporteur for the largest political group in the European Parliament, the European People’s Party.

The MEP argues that mental health is a key component of health and wellness and, like other aspects of health, it can be affected by a range of socioeconomic and environmental factors that must be addressed with integrated strategies. We cannot ignore the fact that while societies are constantly evolving, at the same time they face frequent crises, such as health, humanitarian, natural disasters, climate change, geopolitical conflicts, discrimination and violence, which result in the increase of symptoms of anxiety and stress.

Parliament’s Report on Mental Health seeks to create positive change in the lives of millions of EU citizens. It places the mental health dimension at the center of all policies of the union, seeks its establishment European Year of Mental Health, and suggests the adoption of one of a single European Mental Health Strategy.

Stelios Kymbouropoulos argues that “at a critical moment, the European Parliament, with this report, presents concrete solutions to the needs of European citizens. The overwhelmingly voted report highlights the link between mental and physical health, addresses the need for more research and stresses that there should be collaboration between private and public mental health services. It aims to reduce stigma, raise awareness and the need to include digital technologies in the field of mental health.”
